amazing day
i missed my first train to manch and got drenched but finally got into grand central at about 2:30 : )
as usual chris was fashionably late so we both got there at about the same time lol
time for the first test tube of Jägermeister and a pint of strongbow :D
i cant really remember what happened until john arrived, oh yeah bish went back to his to buy a ticket and drop off his compressed air lol
i made some new friends (dave n john from stoke) at the pool table n managed to get a couple of free pints out of em :P
only john had heard of porcupine tree but not actually listened to their stuff
i recommend PT to a hell of a lot of people!
my first game of pool (not that drunk) and i kicked their arses in a two on one :P although when chris returned we started drinking even more and played some really good close doubles games
i eventually remembered about the pizza i had in my pocket all afternoon and tucked into that :D
can't beat goodfellas meaty madness! lol
john arrived and we said our goodbyes to the lads from stoke
terrible news to hear that charley's (johns girlfriend's) mum had died!
we send all our regards to charley and her family
we headed off for our much awaited abduls chicken tikka with hot sauce kebabs :D
then headed back to grand central for some more drinks :D
no twelve shots in a row as previously mentioned lol but a fair amount got downed!
we headed to meet Jane and left our jackets in her car : )
i nearly lost my ticket!!!
bloody good job i noticed it accidentally tear off as i was taking my jacket off!
an even better job that Jane hadnt parked the car over a grid!
we went into the academy and met up with my boss, his wife, his son and my workmate : )
we got there just as anathema started playing so didnt miss too much
anathema are amazing
i wouldnt be suprised if they headlined their own gig here in manchester next year as Vincent Cavanagh mentioned :D
hopefully steven wilson will work with them to produce their new album again as Vincent Cavanagh mentioned down in Oxford :D
lee douglas has a beautful voice :D
"can't change what happens" :D
i love this band
i'll probably get their t shirt on their next tour : )
they played an almost totally different setlist to the gigs i saw down in london and oxford, and download actually.
great to hear some new songs :D
i cant wait for their new album :D
on to porcupine tree!
a much awaited gig!
a whole month since i last saw them! lol
man i cant get enough of this band
they are everything that's good about music imo
the setlist was almost exactly the same as the oxford gig. great to hear fear of a blank planet again as they didnt play it in london (as his parents were in the audience apparently)
open car was again one of my favourites, as was Anesthetize (of course) and halo, sleep together, dark matter and the sky moves sideways :D
as my workmate jon said i wish they'd play "my ashes" but they didnt have enough time!
if only they could play all night!
got me a t shirt after the gig
great to see a really long queue for the merchandise stall!
shows a hell of a lot of support considering the venue only holds around 2 thousand ?
as usualy my legs and neck were aching as i try to reduce my height and mosh when i can!
quite a surprise that nobody from last.fm came over to say hello : (
nevermind! maybe next time!
we all (my friends, family and workmates lol) said our goodbyes and headed off in our different directions very pleased (as far as i can tell!)
i still cant thank John enough for introducing me to Porcupine Tree back in April! I can't wait to see them for a sixth time! : )

:P

AutumnRose89

Porcupine Tree were lovley, and i'm a very new fan, thank you porcupine tree :D

'The Sky Moves Sideways (phase one)'. They've been playing it a bit this tour, but it's off the album (also called 'The Sky Moves Sideways') from 1995.

hulmebantam

Great show, forgive my ignorance but what the title of the song that he said they had not played since around '97?

Adent1

I was on the left, right at the front. =D Did anyone else think his vocals seemed at bit weird yesterday? kind of like the mic wasn't picking up half his voice... or was that just where I was positioned? He seemed at bit squeakier and more nasal to me (though he was still bloody fantastic!)

MIR17

yeah, i was on left so that could explain it :P the band were ace though

Adent1

As I heard him, it sounded like it said, "MySpace is mogadon," though it could equally have said, "my face," He started on the van Der Graff talk after commenting that he recognised them from Sweden, I think...

username345

Does anyone know what was written on that banner? Someone named their band after a Van Der Graaf Generator song or something? Wilson saw it then started talking about VdGG...

Ser3f

All the crowd at the front on the right were really into, all the people on the left (where I was) less so, but I don't care really thay said they'll return next year so they must like it there. :D

MIR17

Maybe it was just around where we were standing. We were a bit late and only caught the last Anethema track (must check put some of their music) so we weren't that near the front

JustusvV

i thought the crowd was great, really enthusiastic, responding really well to whatever was going on. most of them, me included, were there to hear them play, not sing the songs ourselves.

MIR17

Anyone else think the crowd was a bit boring? a lot of people round us, just stood there motionless not singing the whole time

Ser3f

He heard alright.

opeth_syndrome

btw Ser3f I dont think your shouting for Jupiter Island was heard by Mr Wilson. Next time bring a sign.

opeth_syndrome

Sentimental is a better song than Trains.

Ser3f

I was annoyed Jupiter Island wasn't played. :(

username345

Trains is overrated. I would have loved them to have played Arriving Somewhere..., but they played everything else I wanted them to really.

MetaVurt

If they'd played Sentimental, you wouldn't have got Trains. That's the rule!

opeth_syndrome

I was a bit disappointed that they didn't play Sentimental or Normal:(((

opeth_syndrome

Open Car was the shit

collectspace said:

Ah sadly no... I'm that good of a photographer :p They came from Studio M Yeah it was a great gig, and really nice to hear TSMS live for the first time!! Hoping tomorrow they play 'Waiting' ^_^

collectspace said:

Hey there! Was at the PT gig last night too. I was pretty close to the right front side. The last 5 or 6 PT gigs I always seem to end up there, in front of Colin, constantly smiling back at him almost in awe lol. But yeah... I heard the 'Jupiter Island' request too hahaha. Made me smile a lot ^___^ Can't wait till tomorrow nights show!

opeth_syndrome said:

we should get all the last.fm members to shout Jupiter Island next time.

Ser3f said:

Yeah TSMS was pretty good, but Waiting would be pretty damn cool, i'm hoping to see them again next year when they supposedly come back to Manchester. :p

Ser3f said:

Hiya m8! The gig was fantastic last night, I was on the left directly in front of John Wesley and Richard Barbieri. Did you take those pics yourself lower down on the left panel? They're pretty damn good. :D

T'was fantastic tonight too. They just get better each time I watch them. You should be able to comment on my journal now. Usually it's set to all comments by default and I don't remember changing it but I was in a hurry to get it posted as my lift to Leeds had arrived, lol! And no, I'm not going to Nottm :( Although I wish I was!

Adent1

Hello there! Enjoy the gig? I am nigh on certain that I saw you - were you standing near the front to the left of the stage?

kourinthellama said:
Liking the pics! It was a good gig, I must say - I've cobbled together a review if you fancy. And no I didn't spot you - you weren't tall enough, ha! ;P

Ser3f said:
I also think I saw you last night, you were queuing at the shop at the end of the gig. :D

Hollow_Man said:
I don't know about you, but overall I thought the gig was an above average night :D
