chicken cottage!
got to the apollo just in time for russian circles
absolutely awesome band!
strange that there's no singer but that was cool
mesmorising progressive instrumentals. i've gotta go to more gigs with no singers! this was awesome!
short wait for tool
john n me got into an awesome spot
sort of a dream come true
awesome sound system thanks to the apollo
awesome lightning patterns and effects thanks to maynards art
awesome songs thanks to tool!
they played all of my favouites :D
amazing gig!
no encore
time flew!
got myself a nice cheap t shirt outside for a fiver :D
was maynard having a wank in one of the bridge type acoustic bits? lol
green lasers were awesome
same ones used at foo fighters gigs
im glad a lot of the crowd started moshing!
although my "buzz" was towards the end of the russian circles set
tool were so loud when they first came on!
i quickly got used to it though
we were so lucky with the timing for russian circles
air con wasnt as good as rock city but the stage and sound system was better
knock off t shirts outside were good for the price too
mines nice n soft :D like velvet lol
maynard has a cool stage presence
staying at the back as if he thought the crowd should be watching the guitarists rather than him was a nice gesture
his mohawk is impressive
the stage itself was superb
huge ufo-like circles of lights with amazing tool patterns, near the ceiling that came down and tilted every so often
it was pretty much a best-of gig :D
im well chuffed
not used to seeing so many tool t shirts
maybe i should stop taking my camera to gigs lol to let me fully concentrate on the music
just after the gig finished the lead guitarist (adam jones) stuck his thumbs up and waited until i did the same then he smiled :D
looks like he stole johns hair style
then he threw a frisby thing which i almost caught! so close!
afterwards we met up with chris' cousin. nice hair!
infamous thanks to a black and white bbq photo on chris' flickr
nice to finally meet tilly. such a soft and cute cat!
we had to be careful not to run her over lol
thanks for takin us john!
and thanks for getting me into tool!
definitely one of the best gigs ive ever been to!

Alisons review:

Russian Circles were a decent warm up act for Tool. They were purely instrumental and sounded like a hybrid of Tool and the Mars Volta. The style was progressive space jazz, the musicians were competent, but I won't be rushing out to buy their album.

I'm sorry if I upset any Russian Circles fans but Tool were the reason I was there!

Maynard came on stage dressed in a favoured cowboy hat and biker jacket but the cowboy hat soon came off to reveal a spiky Mohawk. He resembled a demon with the way he danced at the at the back of the stage (for all the fellow Tori Amos fans I couldn't help but think of a line from her 'devils and gods, they are you and I') - and there was a gong at the back of the stage but I don't think it was used (correct me if I'm wrong).

Tool are the only band I've seen where the set passes without me feeling bored. Every song is a journey and this is more evident in the live performance.

Maybe seeing Tool twice within nine months wasn't the best way to appreciate them live but I wouldn't pass up the chance to see them. I can't help but compare it to their last gig at the M.E.N. arena which I honestly thought was better - but maybe because it's a larger venue and it was the first time I saw them.

The lighting rigs resembled flying saucers and there was an abduction style light show but this time it was mainly fluorescent purple lasers until it culminated in green criss crossing lasers that were like a huge green fish-net stocking stretched above the crowd.

Best of the 10,000 days dominated set list were the songs 10,000 days, Vicarious, and they finished with Aenema.

Thanks Alison Dodgson

Russian Circles description from lastfm

Simply, Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental band from Chicago. It would be tough to imagine that a band would be able to develop its own unique presence and innovation with such solid groundwork in the instrumental genre.

However, Russian Circles does bring something new to the table. Their songs feel incredibly narrative and linear. There is no angular flash or mathematical flair. These songs stream through themes and by no means build on just one repeating idea. They are gargantuan in scope. They flow seamlessly from beautiful soft ambience to truly defined melody to massively thick heaviness with a gradual progression that never leaves you lost. Variety is no gimmick and they are a band that does not just vacillate within an achieved sonic identity.

Newborns as of late last year when guitarist, Mike Sullivan and bassist, Colin DeKuiper saw their previous instrumental band, Dakota/Dakota come to a halt. With mounds of ambition and ideas still to produce they quickly contracted drummer, Dave Turncrantz who was willing to leave his residence in the St. Louis band, Riddle of Steel. Playing, practising, and writing became relentless and incessant giving Russian Circles a maturity one would not expect from a fledgling band.
