crowd went nuts for arctic monkeys
the coral were great as usual
they need to release a new album though
amy winehouse was suprisingly good - great dancers
i shouldve listened to the arctic monkeys new album but ive been so into progressive rock lately i havnt fancied em
today i got soaked in the most piss ever lol
not great but at least the crowd weren't boring
lancashire cricket ground is a great venue with around 55 thousand although theyve also started to introduce a secondary barrier to prevent crushes
the weather couldnt have been better, warm sun and a cool breeze every now and then
lots of lovely ladies :D the richard ashcroft fans ;)
highlights for me were the coral's simon diamond and supergrass' moving :D

Phills review

Arctic Monkeys - Old Trafford Cricket Ground - 29th July 2007

More queues than usual getting to the venue
Nice and sunny day, kinda like the ashcroft gig last year. Considering this
summer has been shit weather it's lucky its so nice. Plus it's the day
before my birthday so it's landed nice :-)
Walking into the stage area of the ground brings back good memories of last
years gigs.
The side rails are very handy to sit on enbetween bands
Go get a spot in the crowd to watch Amy Winehouse
A good set. Shocked that she actually seemed sober lol
The two dancers to her left was entertaining to watch, some crazy moves
Sun is a bit of a pain in my eyes, shud have brough sunglasses
Rehab gets the biggest crowd reaction, along with a cool cover of zutons
valerie! (only one month after seeing the real thing)
Oh my god it was hard to get back outta the crowd. Managed to plough through
to the toilets. Pandamonia in there with guys pissing in the sink and girls
filling the place up (saw three go in one cubicle... a guy tried to follow
em in lol)
Back into the crowd for The Coral. Another cracking set from them. Only just
seen em last month, did the exact same set I think. New stuff sounding
better on second listen. The usual classics pass it on and dreaming of you
get the crowd going the most. think their new album is out this week but not
sure.
Probably around the coral and supergrass the crowd were at their worse.
Shame that a lot of the asses that were also at the oasis gig seem to have
jumped on the arctic monkeys bagwagon. the usual idiots throwing piss and
generally shouting drunken shit enbetween songs. even saw some pies getting
chucked, one of which unluckily went into the back of the guy next to me.
luckily he had a hoody on though. anywayz luckily when the bands were on
everything was fine, thank god for loud speakers :-)
moved closer for supergrass. the golden circle seems to be appearing at more
and more of these "big gigs" nowadays. suppose it is safer but shame that
you need to be there ridiculously early to get in em. i think i actually
prefer the option of buying a dearer ticket to get in there cos it's
generally worth that bit more.
manage to get a great spot second or third from the barrier. on come
supergrass. a decent set with a mix of hits and old tunes like caught by the
fuzz and moving. pumping on your stereo got the crowd jumping around. think
a lot of people were shocked at the lack of "alright" but from checking set
lists beforehand i knew it wudnt be played. funny hearing one guy on the way
out of gig saying "i still want supergrass to come back on and play alright"
lol. new stuff sounded pretty good too.
manage to get 2nd row for the arctic monkeys. was going mad watching the
same video of them in clown suits rotate on the main screen lol. some good
tunes while waiting though, including an awesome long remix of richard
ashcroft bitter sweet symphony.
time for the monkeys and i get to the front barrier (as a result of little
girls getting pulled out for fear of being crushed). Kick things off with
fluresant adalescant, IBYLGOTDF and brainstorm! what an awesome trio to get
things going. Still take me home is such a cool track, shame they were
interupted cos the crowd was being too crushed, but cool how they picked up
on the exact same note they broke on.
After about 6 songs this drunk was doing my head in so I moved back a bit.
View wasnt a good but I got to jump around now I wasnt crushed to the front
so it's all good. Most of the middle of the set focussed on the new album
with favs being do me a favour, teddy picker and this house is a circus.
Wrapped stuff up with classics mardy bum, fake tales of sanfrancisco and
when the sun goes down, and the view from the afternoon. awesome stuff.
head back through a massive crowd to the edge for the encore. 505 is
awesome. head off quickly and beat the rush
another top gig and the great cricket ground. roll on next summer for
hopefully more great bands going there :-)

Set List:

'Fluorescent Adolescent'
'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'

NME Review:

"Arctic Monkeys close Old Trafford residency
Second headlining gig goes off without a hitch....almost!
29.Jul.07 11:25pm

Arctic Monkeys rounded off their second headlining show at Old Trafford with
another storming performance at Lancashire County Cricket Club tonight (July
29).

Although the band managed to escape the sound problems which affected their
first concert, the Sheffield four-piece had to stop the gig momentarily
during 'Still Take You Home' when the crowd surged forward.

Announcing the problem, singer Alex Turner said: "You're not going to
believe this but can you all take a step back everybody?"

After a few minutes the band were able to carry on but then had to stop
briefly during 'Dancing Shoes' for the same reason.

Despite the minor crowd problems, their second show proved to be a triumph
with much of the audience belting out the words to a host of singles from
their two albums including 'Fluorescent Adolescent', 'I Bet You Look Good On
The Dancefloor', 'Brianstorm', 'When The Sun Goes Down' and debut album
favourite 'Mardy Bum'.

In reference to the audience's participation, Turner quipped: "You're a
lairy bunch you lot, lairier than yesterday apparently."

Later, the band were forced to stop midway through 'The View From The
Afternoon' because Turner was unable to contain his laughter when he spotted
a member of the crowd dressed as the 'Bo Selecta' caricature of Craig David.

"That is fucking freaking me out," Turner told the audience before he added:
"Get the camera on that guy."

As the Sheffield four-piece brought their second show to a close the band
played 'Fluorescent Adolescent' b-side 'Plastic Tramp' yet again before
Turner took over keyboard duties for '505'.

Signing off with 'A Certain Romance' the singer added: "Thank you very much
for coming. We should do this every year. We've had good weather, plenty of
sunshine and good bands as well."

Earlier Supergrass put in another energetic performance, mixing their set up
from last night's show with a rare outing for the track 'Sitting Up Staight'
and 'Mary' in between new tracks 'Diamond Hoo Ha Man' and 'Rough Knuckles'.

The Coral played exactly the same set list as their first show while Amy
Winehouse got the crowd going with her hit single 'Rehab' and The Zutons
cover 'Valerie'.
